May 30, 2010 - What the Freekick
This weekend's show was a happy-go-lucky, devil-may-care, damn-the-torpedoes type of affair. We hope that some of the sounds we scattered to the airwaves fell on approving ears! The artists we hijacked to help us out included:

Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, Roland Kirk, Orquesta Aragón, Kidd Jordan/Hamid Drake/William Parker, The Meditations, Alejandro Franov, Nudge, Laurie Anderson, Soft Machine, The Reptile Palace Orchestra, The Reigning Sound, The Fall, R. Stevie Moore, Bara singers & players, Gökçen Kaynatan, Burning Star Core, Robert Calvert, Rhythm Activism, Hawkwind, The Velvet Underground, Violent Femmes, The Dead Kennedys and Shalabi Effect!

Now that the archives are back in operation, you may download your own copy of the show for repeated enjoyment!
Or, just click to fire up the show on the player below!

Be sure to tune in again to CKUT 90.3 fm next Sunday at 11 am for another dose of freeform musical medicine. Until then... stay cool, cats!

May 23, 2010 - The Rite of Freekick
My Dad always had trouble with the Boston Police in the 1940's, something he shares with composer Igor Stravinsky (pictured here), who was arrested for his arrangement of The Star Spangled Banner. Who knew it was so dangerous to visit Boston in the 40's? I wonder if Jimi Hendrix ever played his version of The Star Spangled Banner in Boston and got arrested for it. The police didn't come knocking at my door during the most recent edition of Freekick, but then we're not in Boston of the 1940's. They may have been offended by the likes of:

Bob Dylan, The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta, Tommy Babin's Benzene, Master Drummers of Africa, Alpha Thiam, Hedzoleh Soundz, No-Neck Blues Band, Mi Ami, Maggie Estep, Jimi Hendrix, Apollo, Music from the Film, The Slew, NMB Brass Band, Monty Python, Edmund Welles, King Khan and The Shrines, and Tagaq.

May 2, 2010 - Freekicker's Timeless Bridge
"There's nothing to mourn about death any more than there is to mourn about the growing of a flower. What is terrible is not death but the lives people live or don't live up until their death. They don't honor their own lives, they piss on their lives. They shit them away. Dumb fuckers. They concentrate too much on fucking, movies, money, family, fucking. Their minds are full of cotton. They swallow God without thinking, they swallow country without thinking. Soon they forget how to think, they let others think for them. Their brains are stuffed with cotton. They look ugly, they talk ugly, they walk ugly. Play them the great music of the centuries and they can't hear it. Most people's deaths are a sham. There's nothing left to die."
Charles Bukowski (pictured here) from The Captain is Out to Lunch and the Sailors have taken over the Ship (1998)
