May 23, 2009 - Bien-être extra-ordinaire
Was it the spring fever? The sweet taste of Kilkenny ale? Maybe just blessed relief at coming back to a fully functioning studio... whatever the cause, last Saturday's Free Kick show was extraordinarily enjoyable for us hosts, and we hope that some of that well-being was successfully beamed to you, dear listeners.

This week's good times were fueled by artists including David Bowie, The Temptations, Ohio Players, Big John Patton, Ornette Coleman (w/the original quartet), Indigone Trio, Meera Rana (music & lyrics: Gopal Yonjan), Vilayat Khan, Mohammed Rafi & Mehmood (the latter pictured above, with Helen, in Gumnaam), Richard Bliwas, Bonnie Guitar, Kris Kristofferson, Spike Jones, Godz, Desperate Bicycles, Martin Tetreault, Slapp Happy/Henry Cow, Fire Engines, Sun Ra, Alexandra and The Herrings, Bizzart, Geordie Haley, Kevin Blechdom And Eugene Chadbourne, Acid Mothers Temple And The Melting Paraiso U.F.O., Mulatu Astatke & the Heliocentrics, and Sixtoo.

Happily, cable-gnawing mice were not in evidence!

To top it all off, we have one other piece of simply delightful news: the CKUT archives are finally back in action after a prolonged convalescence! So, if you want to check out the show anytime you like, you can just download the mp3:
Or, stream it by going to the CKUT archives page and asking for the slice from Sat May 23, from 21:03 to 23:01.

Usually our next show would be in two weeks - however, CKUT is planning a live broadcast from the sure-to-be fantastic Suoni per il Popolo festival on June 6, so the next Free Kick show will be on June 20, from 9 to 11 eastern time on CKUT 90.3 fm. Please tune in, we're counting on you!

tarra,
Dave

May 9, 2009 - A Real Mother
In my experience, every live radio session has its glitches. Dead air, skipping CDs, bad levels - it's always something. However, I think Swan would agree with me that last weekend's Free Kick show will get the prize for being the most nerve-wracking ever, due to multiple difficulties, hinderances, annoyances and setbacks. Ouch!

Despite the heavy odds, we managed to crank out a pretty good show if I do say so myself, featuring some of the very finest in stress-relieving sound by artists such as:

Boogie Down Productions, Roland Kirk, Boredoms, Illés,
Serge Gainsbourg (vocals: Jean-Claude Brialy), Googoosh,
Sugar Mary, Pekka Airaksinen, Barnyard Drama, David Bowie, Elfin Saddle, Tuli Kupferberg, David Peel & The Lower East Side, The Jolly Boys, Palace Brothers, Gogol Bordello, Warsaw Village Band, Lord Sitar, Polyphonic Size, and Jackie Mittoo!

And, before the end of the show everything was right as rain thanks to the efforts of Marc - who spent his Saturday evening hunting down and fixing the real problem, while we just fretted about our mixes. Thanks for sticking with us, listeners!

We'll try again on Saturday night, May 23, from 9-11 pm eastern on CKUT 90.3 fm.

Dave
