February 14, 2009 - Black Valentine
Yep, we enjoyed a double dose of specialness on the Free Kick show this week with Valentine's Day and Black History Month clamoring for attention. And on top of that, we just completed our third year as CKUT's biweekly Saturday night free form music show! All leading to x-amount of celebration.... As Shawn so thoughtfully put it: while we couldn't send flowers to great black music, we were able to pay it a lot of attention, and that's what really counts isn't it? As for our own birthday - well, just like every week, all we need is your company to make it a party. Listeners, thanks for being there
The list of artists we lovingly showcased in this episode included: The Last Poets, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Lee Dorsey, Staples Singers, Curtis Mayfield, Kool & the Gang, Otis Redding, The Cramps, The Wailers, Robert Johnson, Billie Holiday, Little Richard, Jackie & The Starlites, Screamin'Jay Hawkins, R.L. Burnside, Rufus Harley, John Coltrane, Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra, Louis Moholo Octet, Seu Jorge, The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Abd Al Malik, DJ Rupture (vocals: Sister Nancy), Linton Kwesi Johnson, Mutabaruka, and Johnnie Osbourne.
Next show is Sat Feb 28 from 9-11 pm on CKUT 90.3 fm.
