Master's Free Kick!
Hmmm that must be the most obscure title for the show yet... if you're puzzled, you can take a look at the playlist for last Saturday's show and all will become clear.
Once again, a hectic summer schedule means a quick & dirty blog post. In short, this edition of Free Kick was a musical cornucopia of delights featuring such noted artists as:
The Roots feat. Cody ChesnuTT, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Rufus Harley, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Master Chivero, Lord Kitchener, Devendra Banhart, the Grateful Dead, Quarteto Novo, The Black Keys, Gaby Kerpel, Ousmane Sembene, Les Amazones de Guinee, A Hawk and a Handsaw and the Hun Hangar Ensemble, Talibam!, The Unireverse, Kevin Ayers, Slava Tsukerman & Brenda I. Hutchinson & Clive Smith, Fall of Saigon, The Fall, Wire, X-Ray Spex, the Buzzcocks,
Johnny Thunders And The Heartbreakers, Bauhaus, and John Kunaka!
If you want to check it out again, you can download the show from the CKUT site using these links:
Or go to the CKUT archives page and stream the show for Saturday July 21 from 21:05 t0 23:04.
EXTRA! I included a cinematic moment in this show with a scene from Ousmane Sembene's last film, Moolade (filmed in Burkina Faso and released in 2004), featuring some cool choral chanting from the triumphant women and a bit of griot-style singing. The language they're speaking is Bambara.
Sembene (picture above), who died in June at the age of 84, is considered to be the daddy of African cinema. He grew up in Senegal (in the Casamance region to be exact), served in the French army in WWII and worked on the docks in Marseille after the war. His artistic career started with three novels published in the late 50s; he made his first film La Noire de... in 1966 and continued right up until shortly before his death.

Bye for now folks, I'm going on vacation so Shawn will be solo at the helm for the next Free Kick excursion on August 4 from 9-11 pm eastern time on CKUT 90.3 fm in Montreal. Don't miss it!
