Yes, we are indeed through with updating this blog, almost exactly five years after starting it! From now on, we will only be updating the Free Kick Podcast Zone... but never fear, we will continue to program the Free Kick Video Lounge in the new location for your viewing pleasure. This blog will remain in place in case you want to delve into the history of the show and check out the old video posts, many of which still work.

Also, we won't be providing links to the audio of the show in the CKUT archives as before, just to our own archive at freekick.ca. That means if you want to get the higher quality (128 kbps) mp3 version of the show, you will need to go to the CKUT archives during the week after the show, either via the program grid or the advanced archive interface. We are sure that audiophiles will be able to deal with this extra step in order to get the high fidelity they crave!

Never mind, here's your account of what when down on last Sunday's show: much dwelling on darkness, lightness, holiday wishes and a tribute to Freekick hero Don Van Vliet AKA Captain Beefheart (pictured here in a 1980 photo by Alex Waterhouse-Hayward), who died from complications of MS on Friday Dec. 17.

My Dad always had trouble with the Boston Police in the 1940's, something he shares with composer Igor Stravinsky (pictured here), who was arrested for his arrangement of The Star Spangled Banner. Who knew it was so dangerous to visit Boston in the 40's? I wonder if Jimi Hendrix ever played his version of The Star Spangled Banner in Boston and got arrested for it. The police didn't come knocking at my door during the most recent edition of Freekick, but then we're not in Boston of the 1940's. They may have been offended by the likes of:

Live musicians graced the studios of CKUT last weekend in a tribute to Sun Ra, whose arrival day is quickly coming up on May 22nd. Sun Ra believed he wasn't so much born, as arrived from the planet Saturn. He has since departed, but Sun Ra is warmly remembered and will be celebrated around the world this coming weekend. North, My Love, who performed on our show will be hosting a tribute concert on Saturday, May 22nd at INTERSTICE, 242 Young St. in Griffintown, Montreal. Doors at 8PM, Show at 9PM - 5$ Admission. Be honest listeners, is we is or is we ain't among radio's most unwanted? "Discom-bobulated" is a word that has been used to describe the sound of Free Kick's radio presence on last Sunday's show. Who am I to argue? November 1, 2009 - Freekick de los muertos

Freekick goes to cemeteries to communicate with the souls of the departed, and builds private altars, containing the favorite CKUT radio shows, as well as songs and memorabilia, of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the listeners, so that the listeners will hear the music and the comments of the programmers directed to them. Celebrations can take a humorous tone, as Freekick remembers funny events and anecdotes about the departed.

October 25, 2009 - Funding Drive Accordion Party!
There was much huffing, puffing and pressing of buttons in the CKUT broadcast studio during this second Freekick funding drive extravaganza for 2009, as we welcomed Mussaver and the Coal Choir (AKA Katherine Peacock, Fiona Ainsworth, Sarah Tracy and Arwen Fleming), Jordi Rosen and Pierre Gauvin into our studios for an unprecendented accordion blowout! Non-accordionist Aaron Rosenblum also dropped by to grace us with a tune on his tiny but surprisingly loud parlor guitar. We hope you enjoyed it... and for those who actually contributed some support to the station during this crucial time, many thanks!

And of course, huge gratitude to the wonderful musicians who dragged themselves over to the station on a Sunday morning just to help us out with their good vibes and beautiful music. It's been a memorable week here in weather-obsessed Montreal: after not-so-stoically enduring a damp & chilly June/July, we finally got our summer heatwave in mid-August. But even with temps that "feel like" over 40 degrees, I'm not hearing many complaints - perhaps we need a little heat- and humidity-induced discomfort to really feel we've had a true experience of summer, before heading back into the abyss?

Was it the spring fever? The sweet taste of Kilkenny ale? Maybe just blessed relief at coming back to a fully functioning studio... whatever the cause, last Saturday's Free Kick show was extraordinarily enjoyable for us hosts, and we hope that some of that well-being was successfully beamed to you, dear listeners.

In my experience, every live radio session has its glitches. Dead air, skipping CDs, bad levels - it's always something. However, I think Swan would agree with me that last weekend's Free Kick show will get the prize for being the most nerve-wracking ever, due to multiple difficulties, hinderances, annoyances and setbacks. Ouch!

Despite the heavy odds, we managed to crank out a pretty good show if I do say so myself, featuring some of the very finest in stress-relieving sound by artists such as:

Springtime has definitely arrived in Montreal. The birds are singing, the doggie doo is stinking, the students are scrambling, and the temperature is rising. Isn't it nice to peel off all those layers of extra clothing and strut your stuff on the Main?

Ringing in the spring, Freekick payed tribute to New Orleans blues, soul and funk legend Eddie Bo (pictured here), who, sadly, passed away a few weeks ago. Dare I say it... we may be a enjoying a real good-old "early" spring here in Montreal! The snow is gone, pale garbage covers the streets (at least in my neighbourhood) and the dog shit is reeking. However, it ain't over till it's over - and the weather hasn't exactly been monotonous so far this winter. So I am not going to be surprised by anything Mother Nature may have in her trick bag.

"The KK (Knowing that one Knows) Principle
In its simplest form, the KK principle says that, for any proposition p, if one knows that p, then one knows that one knows it. More complex formulations say that if one knows that p, then one is in a position to know that one knows it, and this is fleshed out in a variety of ways. One reason why philosophers are interested in the KK principle is its relevance to the question of whether epistemic logic is a branch of modal logic. An important issue in modal logic is whether necessary truths are necessarily necessary; the corresponding issue in modal epistemic logic is whether the KK principle holds. Another reason for interest in the principle is its relevance to the debate between internalists and externalists about knowledge. It is natural for internalists to endorse something like the KK principle, and for externalists to reject it. A third reason for interest in the KK principle is its connection to the paradox of the Surprise Examination. The reasoning which generates this paradox seems to assume that certain kinds of knowledge can be repeatedly iterated, and hence that something like the KK principle holds. A final reason for studying the principle is its relevance to recent debates about the luminosity of mental states (where a mental state is luminous iff, roughly, one cannot be in that state without being in a position to know that one is in it). If the KK principle holds, then knowledge is a luminous mental state; but there are powerful arguments against the luminosity of other mental states which seem to show that this cannot be the case."

Well, there are always certain limits of course, but thankfully Shawn and I were able to saunter unsupervised into the CKUT studios last Saturday and just play whatever the hell we wanted - hopefully with positive results for you, dear listeners.

November 22, 2008 - Ballin' the Freekick!

In our story we have called ourselves Sano and Enfermada. Sano and Enfermada are, at the point the story begins, at a conference. It is a winter’s day in a strange city and they are looking for a chemist’s shop to try to buy some medicine for Enfermada. A subzero wind blows down the long street. Enfermada suggests they ask for directions rather than conducting a random search. Sano, as befits the one in good health, and accompanied by Enfermada, darts into shops to make enquiries. After some time it becomes clear that there is no such shop in the neighbourhood and they agree to call a halt to their search. Sano then says ‘I’m sorry to have dragged you all this way when you’re not well’. His choice ofwords surprises Enfermada who replies ‘You didn’t drag me, I chose to come’, occasioning some surprise in turn to Sano.

Sano protests that he feels responsible and Enfermada protests in return that she does not wish him to feel responsible since that places her in the position of one who is not responsible, and by implication, that she is one who is incapable of making decisions about her own well being. They then debate whether one taking responsibility deprives the other of responsibility. For Sano the network of obligations is paramount. He is at first unable to grasp the idea that anyone could suppose that the fulfilment of a taken-for-granted obligation on the healthy to take charge of the care ofthe ill could be construed as a threat to some freedom that he finds mythical. Enfermada is determined to refuse Sano’s claim of responsibility, since in her feminist framework it is both unacceptable for another to position her as merely an accessory to their actions, rather than someone who has agency in her own right, and for her to accept such a positioning. Her concern is only in part for the unintended subject position that his words have apparently invited her to step into. She believes that his capacity to formulate their activity in such a way may be indicative ofa general attitude towards her (and to women in general) as marginal, as other than central actors in their own life stories. She knows that he does not wish or intend to marginalise women and so she draws attention to the subject position made available in his talk and refuses to step into it. But her protest positions Sano as sexist, a positioning which he in turn finds offensive. His inclination is therefore to reject Enfermada’s gloss as an incorrect reading of his words. But this of course only makes sense in his moral order of interpersonal obligations, not in the feminist moral order. Both speakers are committed to a pre-existing idea of themselves that they had prior to the interchange, Enfermada as a feminist and Sano as one who wishes to fulfil socially mandatory obligations. They are also both committed to their hearing of the interchange. Their protests are each aimed at sustaining these definitions and as such have strong emotional loading."
