August 15, 2010 - Freekick Guidebook on Fire
Cut loose from customary moorings, I wandered lonely as a cloud through the CKUT control room during last Sunday's Freekick show. The rules were burned as I took off on a meandering musical journey to who-knows-where. Along the way we heard contributions from:

Roland Kirk, Bismillah Khan (pictured), The Nels Cline Singers, Cicada, Sly Stone, Little Sister, Graham Central Station, R. Stevie Moore, Boredoms, Blk Jks, Sugar Mary, Land of Kush's Egyptian Light Orchestra (vocals: Katie Moore), Mauricio Kagel/Arditti Quartet, John Cale, The Fall, A.E. Bizottság, A_Dontigny, Emeralds, J. Dilla and LSC!

Were you along for the ride? Never mind, you can wander down that path again - simply download an mp3 of the show for your very own:Or, click on the player below to hear it again this very instant:

Join us on the Free Kick next week at the usual time (Sunday from 11 am to 1 pm) on CKUT 90.3 FM. Swan will be back, rested & raring to go I'm sure!

August 8, 2010 - Natural Kick
What kind of show are we? One that does not joke around by staying in bed on a Sunday morning when we should be purveying unexpected musical mixes to friends and neighbours... On this weekend's Free Kick show, after opening my eyes, taking a deep breath & striding purposefully into the control room, I did my best to deliver the required goods in the glaring absence of Swan. I hope the results met with your approval, dear listeners! I broke out sounds from the following artists for your enjoyment:

Duke Ellington (pictured) and his Orchestra featuring Mahalia Jackson, Roland Kirk, Sun Ra & his Arkestra, J. B. Lenoir, Alex Chilton, Robert Wyatt, The Thermometers, Rangda, Group Doueh, Blue Ōyster Cult, The Buzzcocks, Pierre Henry et Michel Columbier, Barnyard Drama, Gilberto Gil, Jackson do Pandeiro, Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho, Bunny Wailer, Marcia Griffiths, Channel One, The Tamlins, Galaxis and Maxime de la Rochefoucauld!

Did you sleep through it? Want to examine a particular bass line in detail? No problemo, just download an mp3 copy of the show and then listen repeatedly to your heart's content:

August 1, 2010 - One of Those Days on Freekick
Ever felt like a potato head? I, for one, was certainly in a classic Sunday morning vegetative state during last weekend's show. Yet somehow I managed (mostly) to push the right buttons with my leafy appendages, while Swan as usual sailed through complicated mixes with the greatest of ease.

The mainly non-vegetable artists that we played included: Roland Kirk, Roy Harper, Los Curramberos de Guayabal, Südwestfunk Orchestra, György Ligeti, Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, Goran Bregović, Johnny Mandel, The Boswell Sisters, Fame Original Motion Picture Cast, Ralph McDonald, Devo, Shonen Knife, A. Papadzis, Land of Kush's Egyptian Light Orchestra, Narayan Gopal & Gyana Rana, Storsveit Nix Noltes, Rotfront, The Dhol Foundation, Mantronix, and Jackie Mittoo!

That's it for now! I'll be back again next Sunday to cultivate the Free Kick musical garden further on CKUT 90.3 FM, from 11 am to 1 pm.
