November 29, 2009 - Freekick is not a Machine
"Discom-bobulated" is a word that has been used to describe the sound of Free Kick's radio presence on last Sunday's show. Who am I to argue? Both Swan and myself are currently feeling the pressures of a grad school system that seeks to turn us into assignment-spewing automatons. But we are NOT typewriters, nosirree! To prove this, we managed to make it into the CKUT studios on time, flick the correct switches and turn the required knobs to deliver another batch of musical goodness to you dear listeners, including sounds by the likes of:

Big Star, Roland Kirk, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Eddie Gale, Anne Briggs, Pernambuco do Pandeiro e Seu Regional, Eddy Manson His Orchestra and Harmonica Section, Sam Louis & The Witnesses (Louis Prima), Spike Jones, Alexandra & The Herrings, B-52's, Oingo Boingo, Bonzo Dog Band (some of whom are pictured here), Aut'Chose, Hedzoleh Sounds, Jonathan Kane, György Ligeti/Chor des Norddeutschen Rundfunks Hamburg, The Stanley Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, The Boredoms, Iggy Pop, Black Flag, The Last Poets, Alamaailman Vasarat, and Argentinisches Tango-Orchester Oscar Roma!

This can all be easily verified by downloading an mp3 of the show for review:
Or go to the CKUT archives page and stream the show from Sunday Nov. 29, 11:00 to 13:01.

Check us out again next Sunday Dec 6 from 11 am to 1 pm on CKUT 90.3 fm & hear for yourself how we maintain our composure and dignity...

November 15, 2009 - Sunday Kicking

On most Sundays you will find families exploiting bunny rabbits and either kicking around a record or flying whales. There is a running track that encircles the entire solar system. A great place for listening to CKUT 90.3 FM on a sunny day. With stunning views of planetary debris in the Martian area of the solar system, the asteroid belt is a great place to get away. The park has easy access. You just need to take either the interplanetary shuttle from the surface of Mars or Phobos City bus # 21 from Planet-side Station.

If you went last week, you may have heard last week's edition of the Freekick radio show featuring such legendary artists as Alton Ellis, Roland Kirk, Earl King, Lee Dorsey, James Booker, Count Ossie & the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari, Elvis Costello, Kasai Allstars, Halabisky's Uprising, Juzoas Milasius, Tonstarttsbandht, King Khan & the BBQ Show, Bloodshot Bill, Lake of Stew, Ken Nordine, Sir Richard Bishop, Neil Young, Patrick J. Touhey, Pinpeat Orchestra of the Cambodian Royal Ballet/Choirs of the Cambodian Royal Palace, Mi Ami, Can, Joe Meek & The Blue Men, Raymond Scott, Magazine, Neal Morgan, Godz, Theresa Transistor, and Sixtoo.

You can always listen to the show now by clicking away...
Or simply go directly to CKUT archives page and download from 11.01 to 13.00.

November 1, 2009 - Freekick de los muertos

Freekick goes to cemeteries to communicate with the souls of the departed, and builds private altars, containing the favorite CKUT radio shows, as well as songs and memorabilia, of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the listeners, so that the listeners will hear the music and the comments of the programmers directed to them. Celebrations can take a humorous tone, as Freekick remembers funny events and anecdotes about the departed.

This week's show featured The Skatalites, Roland Kirk, Pharoah Sanders, Hallelujah Chicken Run Band, Warsaw Village Band, Climax Golden Twins, Sun City Girls, Kevin Blechdom & Eugene Chadbourne, Kids Eat Crayons, The Pixies, Jan & Dean, Deja Voodoo, Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard, Ivor Cutler, R. Stevie Moore, Country Teasers, Kathy Kennedy, Martin Tétreault/Otomo Yoshihide, Violeta Parra, Szíami, Curtis Mayfield, L. Shankar and Frank Zappa, Ska Cubano, Mr. Bungle, and Jackie Mittoo.

Relive this experience by listening to the show:
Or stream it from the CKUT archives page: you'll be wanting the show from Sunday November 1 from 11:00 to 13:00.

Listen to the Freekick again next Sunday, November 8, at 11 am on CKUT 90.3 fm.

Don't forget to spend a bit of time in the Free Kick Video Lounge:
