February 16, 2008 - Make It Stop!
February, I mean... enough already with this torture! We at the Free Kick can only hope that last Saturday's show provided you dear listeners/ readers with a little musical relief from the dull wintry monotony currently afflicting Montreal. With more nods to Black History Month as well as a few post-valentine hangovers, we did our best to brighten up the airwaves with selections from artists including:

Ennio Morricone, Alif, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Jorge Ben, Charles Mingus, Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble, Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath, The Pharaohs, Gil Scott-Heron, Original Cast of the Gospel at Colonus, Caetano Veloso, Adriano Celentano, Ross Johnson, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Basil Kirchin, Jani Christou, The Kinks, Wire, Burt Ward (w/Frank Zappa), GTOs, The Buzzcocks, Gang Of Four, Joy Division, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Baby Dee, and Lennie Hibbert!

If you want to bathe in this experience over and over again, look no further than the CKUT archives... here are the links to download the show in mp3 format:
If you just want to stream the show, go to the CKUT archive web page, and ask for Sat Feb 16 from 21:03 to 23:02.

By the way, it is usual for the show before us to go over time and encroach on our slot. This week, the last selection they played (up till 21:03:30 or so) featured some particularly crass & stupid lyrics of a sort you would never hear us play - it's just not the Free Kick style! So don't be put off if you hear stuff like that at the time when our show is supposed to be starting.

That's it for now... don't forget to check back for the next edition of the Free Kick, Saturday March 1 from 9-11 pm on CKUT 90.3 fm!

ciao
Dave

BONUS!!
===> Right this way folks, the Free Kick Video Lounge beckons with a raft of semi-related video links!

Enjoy! [Whoops here they are, sorry about the previous omission...]

February 2, 2007 - The Free Side Wins Again!
Yes 'tis true, this weekend's Free Kick show marked the second anniversary of our biweekly Saturday night spot on Montreal's airwaves. However, Shawn and I are unsentimental types & decided instead to shine our musical spotlight on a more public occasion: Black History Month, which currently occupies that bleak & brutal section of the calendar known as... February.

So, the first part of the show featured a choice selection of great black music favourites from the US (a lot of them recorded in an era when the prospect of a black president seemed pretty remote), the UK and Africa. Not much different from the usual Free Kick menu, now that you mention it!

Here's a list of the artists we played last Saturday night:

Public Enemy, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Curtis Mayfield, Fred Wesley & the JBs, Cymande, Bongos Ikwue, Kool & The Gang, Ex-Centric Sound System, George Duke, Masanka Sankayi + Kasai Allstars ft. Mutumilayi, Konono No.1, Syd Barrett, Young Marble Giants, Henry Flynt & Nova'Billy, Ilya Antanasov, Oonerk & Anitsak, Balinese trance singers, The Hawketts, Richard Berry & The Pharaohs, Frank Zappa, Jefferson Airplane, The Godz, David Peel & The Lower East Side, The Fugs, Count Five, The Sonics, and Jeffrey Lewis !

Want to hear it again? You can download an mp3 file from the archives via the below:
Or, if you just want to stream the show, you can go the CKUT archives page and get Sat. Dec 2 from 21:03 to 23:01.

Oh, and if you want to delve further into Black history, you could always check out the following links:
That's it for this dispatch from the free side! Check back with us again for our next show on CKUT 90.3 fm, coming at you Saturday Feb 16 from 9-11 pm.
