August 19, 2006 - Oh Yeah
The summer light is on the wane these days, but the laziness persists... I actually meant to post last night, but got tempted away to the Damo Suzuki show at the Salla Rossa, in which the ex-Can vocal dynamo took the stage for some improvised performances with local notables Sixtoo, AIDS Wolf and Feu Therese. I made the right choice!

Being a 9-5 working stiff, I could only stay for the first part that paired Damo with Sixtoo, but from the outset the exuberant music these guys were making had me grinning and nodding like... well, like I was at the next best thing to a Can show. Throughout the set, only a bar or two of a new beat would sound before Damo was in full flight with his trademark pseudo-English krautscat (revealing an unexpected affinity with Louis Armstrong), sounding like he had been working on the tune for ages. And according to reports, the show just kept on giving in the later sets.

Since I know the readership of this blog is fairly limited, I'm posting a link to a zip file that contains a recording of the show (mp3) + pictures, courtesy of Cloudscapes, without fear of killing his server.

Well, as for the radio show of last Saturday, I tried to keep up an adequate level of freekickiosity in the absence of Shawn. Hope you were digging it. To hear it again, you can use the following links to download mp3s:

Link expired!

Or, if you just want to stream the show, you can go to the CKUT archives page and get the show from August 19, 21:03 - 23:02

Next Freekick show: Saturday September 2 from 9-11 pm on CKUT 90.3 fm in Montreal. Shawn will be back!

halleluwah y'all!

August 5th, 2006 - Shawn Bends It!

Started off with some classic hip-hop, Roxanne Shante from 1984, sounding like a child, and then from the height of her career and the Colors Soundtrack, sounding very confident.

This eclectic show featured a couple of very early doo-wop songs by a variety of artists including one Louis Reed (pictured). His group at the time was known as The Roughnecks and/or The Beachnuts, depending on who you ask.

Dave will be captaining the ship solo next week as I'm off on a much deserved break. Ciao todos!
